Line-by-line Interpretation

Line 1

The tripod is on top of its toe, whether it is sharp or not. If you get a concubine and give her a son, there is no blame.

Guidance

Tripod legs are inverted; beneficial for clearing waste; taking a concubine and having a son; no fault.

Modern Insight

At the beginning of establishing a new order, the first step is to thoroughly clear the remnants of the old system. At the same time, do not be bound by convention in selecting talent; even if of humble origin, as long as they have true talent and learning, they should be given important positions.

Line 2

The tripod is solid. I have a hatred and illness, but if I can't do it, it's auspicious.

Guidance

There is food in the tripod; my enemy has an illness and cannot approach me; auspicious.

Modern Insight

Having substance in your belly, your heart is not flustered. When you have real strength and ability, you need not fear external jealousy and criticism. Your true talent and learning are your best protection.

Line 3

The tripod's ears and leather are blocked. Not eating pheasant paste. Fang Yu regrets her loss and is lucky in the end.

Guidance

Tripod ears are changed; function is blocked; delicious food in the tripod cannot be enjoyed.

Modern Insight

Your talent or a good system cannot function because the communication channels (tripod ears) are blocked. This is a period when talent is buried. But do not lose heart; when the time comes (Fang Yu), this deadlock will eventually be broken.

Line 4

The tripod breaks its legs and covers the male vessel. Its shape is rich and fierce.

Guidance

Tripod legs are broken; overturning the delicacies of the prince; there is danger.

Modern Insight

This is the most dangerous line of the Ding hexagram. It sternly warns: using the wrong person, virtue not matching position, will inevitably lead to the collapse of the entire system. Entrusting important responsibilities to an incompetent villain (broken legs) will not only destroy the cause but also humiliate the entire team.

Line 5

The yellow ear of the tripod is golden, which is beneficial to chastity.

Guidance

Tripod has yellow ears and golden handle; beneficial for maintaining the right path.

Modern Insight

This is the ideal state. You are in the ruler's position, humble and centered (yellow ears), and have appointed strong and capable assistants (golden handle). Leader and executor work together perfectly; the entire organization is stable and efficient, able to develop for a long time.

Line 6

Ding Yuxuan, good luck and no disadvantages.

Guidance

Tripod has jade handle; great fortune; nothing unfavorable.

Modern Insight

This is the highest realm of the Ding hexagram. Jade is warm and tough. This represents that the system and culture you have established have reached the perfect state of combining firmness and softness, benevolence and authority. It is not only stable but also full of wisdom and humanistic care, and will bless generations to come.
